Canada, with its many spectacular parks and diverse natural areas, is a popular vacation destination for travelers all over the world, particularly Canadians and their American neighbors. Many families hate the idea of leaving their beloved pets behind when going on holiday – but they're often unaware of how to include their four-legged friends in their holiday plans.
"Providing that your pet is fit for travel and enjoys it, and you're willing to take him along, then why not?" asks Angela Wu, owner of Pet Friendly Canada, an internet lodging directory of accommodations that welcome pets. "Thousands of families travel with their pets every year and have a great time together. For a lot of people, their pets are an important part of the family."
Pet owners are reminded that it's always a good idea to make certain preparations before traveling with their pet. Proper identification, appropriate medications flea and tick control, heartworm pills, plus any
> prescription medications your pet requires), and up-to-date vaccinations are just a few things that should be taken care of prior to leaving. Finding and booking accommodations in advance, too, will ensure you and your pooch have a place to stay.
If you're crossing the border into Canada, it's also important to research in advance what type of documentation you'll need in order to bring your beloved pet into the country. For instance, dogs and cats will need a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. The National Animal Health Program, operated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, offers information on bringing pets into Canada. Pet owners should also be aware of documentation required to bring pets back into their country of origin.
